Looking For Acrylic Photo Prints? Here Are 10 Things You Should Know Before Buying

When you step into a high-end art gallery, there is often one medium that stops you in your tracks. It’s the one that seems to glow from within, possessing a depth so profound it feels as though you could reach through the surface and touch the landscape itself. This is the magic of the acrylic photo print.

As a photographer, I am constantly seeking ways to bridge the gap between the moment I captured behind the lens and the physical experience of that moment on your wall. Acrylic is, in my professional opinion, one of the most visionary ways to display fine art photography. However, not all acrylic prints are created equal. If you are looking to invest in museum-quality wall art, there are technical nuances that separate a "department store" print from a true collector’s piece.

Before you transform your space, here are 10 essential things you should know about buying acrylic photo prints.

1. The Printing Method: Face Mounting vs. Direct Printing

The most critical factor in the quality of an acrylic print is how the image is actually applied to the glass. Many budget-friendly services use "direct printing," where the ink is sprayed directly onto the back of the acrylic. While this is faster and cheaper, it lacks the soul and clarity of a true gallery piece.

At Scott Prokop Prints, we utilize the Face Mounting method. This involves taking a high-resolution photographic print and mounting it behind 2mm of glossy acrylic glass using a permanent, museum-grade silicone seal. This process eliminates the air gap between the photo and the glass, which is what creates that signature "vacuum" look and breathtaking 3D depth.

2. The Paper Matters: Fuji Crystal DP II

The soul of an acrylic print is the paper beneath the glass. For a piece to be considered "museum-quality," it shouldn't be an inkjet reproduction. I advocate for the Photo Print On Fuji Crystal DP II.

This is the gold standard for gallery photo prints. It is produced using high-resolution laser exposure and traditional photochemical development. This isn't just "printing"; it’s modern alchemy. This paper offers an ultra-wide color gamut and luminous contrast that captures the subtle gradients of a prairie sunrise or the sharp textures of an architectural marvel. By using the Glossy surface specifically, we maximize the vividness before it even meets the acrylic.

3. The 75-Year Color Brilliance Guarantee

Art is an investment in your environment and your legacy. One of the primary reasons collectors choose our acrylic prints is the 75-year color brilliance guarantee. Because the Fuji Crystal Archive paper is sealed airtight behind the acrylic and backed by aluminum, the colors are protected from atmospheric contaminants and UV degradation.

When you hang a piece from the Saskatoon collection, you aren't just decorating for the season; you are securing a vibrant window into the world that will look just as stunning decades from now as it does today.

4. Understanding the 3D Depth Effect

The "wow" factor of acrylic comes from the refraction of light. When light enters the 2mm glossy acrylic glass, it bounces off the photographic print and reflects back through the glass. This creates a perceived 3D effect, where colors seem more saturated and blacks feel infinitely deep.

While some labs offer thicker 1/2" or 1" acrylic blocks (which are beautiful for desk displays), the 2mm thickness combined with a 3mm Aluminum Dibond backing is the ideal "sweet spot" for wall-mounted art. It provides the depth and premium feel without the excessive weight that can make hanging large-scale pieces a structural challenge.

5. Structural Integrity: The Role of Aluminum Dibond

Acrylic on its own is a relatively flexible material. Over time, a large sheet of acrylic can bow or warp if not properly supported. To ensure your art remains perfectly flat for a lifetime, our acrylic prints are professionally mounted on a 3mm Aluminum Dibond backing.

This composite material: consisting of two layers of aluminum with a polyethylene core: provides incredible rigidity while remaining lightweight. It is the foundation that allows us to offer larger sizes without compromising the integrity of the piece. If you’re curious about how these sizes look in a real space, I highly recommend checking out our Size Guide.

6. Choosing the Right Subject Matter

Not every photograph is meant for acrylic. To truly take advantage of the medium, you want images with high contrast, vibrant colors, or intricate details.

  • Landscapes: Scenes with water or sky, like those in my Canadian Rockies collection, excel in acrylic because the gloss mimics the natural reflection of water.
  • Urban Scenes: Night photography and cityscapes benefit from the way acrylic handles light highlights.
  • Abstracts: Intricate textures become almost tactile under the glass.

7. Acrylic vs. Metal: Which is Right for Your Room?

One question I often hear is: "Should I get Acrylic or Metal?" The answer depends on your room's lighting. Acrylic is glossy; it loves light but it also reflects it. If you have a room with massive windows directly opposite the hanging spot, the glare might be a distraction.

In those cases, I often suggest a Metal Print. My metal prints are direct prints on 3mm Aluminum Dibond using a 7-color UV printing process. They feature a matte, reflection-free surface with a subtle shimmer in the highlights. They are also incredibly water-resistant, making them suitable for bathrooms or even sheltered outdoor areas. Note that for these specialized metal prints, SuperResolution is deactivated to maintain the organic texture of the aluminum. You can read a deeper dive into this comparison in my blog post: Acrylic vs. Metal vs. Framed.

8. The Importance of Diamond-Polished Edges

When you look at an acrylic print from the side, you should see crystal clarity, not dull grey tool marks. High-end prints feature diamond-polished edges. This process buffs the cut edges of the acrylic until they are as transparent as the face of the print. It allows light to enter from the sides, further enhancing the internal glow of the photograph. It is a small detail that marks the difference between a mass-produced product and a piece of fine art.

9. Elevating the Look: The Basel Floater Frame

While many people love the "frameless" look of acrylic (which arrives exhibition-ready with aluminum rails for a floating effect), some spaces require a bit more architectural gravity. This is where the Floater Frame comes in.

Our standard for excellence is the Basel 0.6 inch Black Oak floater frame. The print is set inside the frame with a "shadow gap," creating a levitating 3D effect. It provides the best of both worlds: the modern, high-definition punch of acrylic with the traditional elegance of a wooden frame. This combination is often the choice for those looking to create a sophisticated gallery feel in a home office or living room.

10. Placement and Environment

Acrylic prints are remarkably hardy. Because the print is sealed with museum-grade silicone between aluminum and glass, it is essentially waterproof. This makes them the premier choice for "difficult" environments like high-end kitchens or spa-like bathrooms where humidity would destroy a traditional paper print behind a standard frame.

However, keep in mind that they are substantial pieces of art. When you order from the New Prints collection, your acrylic print will arrive with professional-grade hanging hardware. It’s designed to be simple to install, but for very large pieces, having a second pair of hands is always a good idea to ensure the weight is distributed correctly.

Final Thoughts: The Visionary Choice

Choosing art is a personal journey. It’s about more than just filling a void on a wall; it’s about capturing a feeling and bringing it into your daily life. Acrylic prints represent the pinnacle of modern photographic display: they are bold, luminous, and built to last a lifetime.
