Looking for Saskatoon Wall Art? Here Are 5 Things You Should Know About Metal and Acrylic Prints

Saskatoon is a city that naturally commands attention. Whether it’s the way the morning light catches the arches of the Broadway Bridge or the dramatic purple hues that settle over the South Saskatchewan River at dusk, there is a visual poetry to our home that deserves more than just a standard photo print. When you’re looking to bring a piece of the "City of Bridges" into your home or office, the medium you choose matters just as much as the image itself.

In my time capturing the Canadian Prairies, I’ve found that two premium finishes consistently stand out for modern interiors: Metal and Acrylic. Both offer a sleek, contemporary look that eliminates the need for traditional matting and heavy glass, but they behave very differently in your space.

If you’re currently scouting for Saskatoon wall art, here are five essential things you should know about choosing between Metal and Acrylic prints to ensure your investment looks stunning for decades to come.

1. The Direct Beauty of Metal: 3mm Aluminum Dibond

When people talk about "Metal Prints," there are a few different ways to make them. At Scott Prokop Prints, my standard for metal is a Direct Print on 3mm Aluminum Dibond. This isn't a thin sheet of tin; it's a composite material consisting of two thin layers of aluminum with a solid polyethylene core. This makes it incredibly lightweight yet exceptionally rigid.

The process involves a 7-color UV printing technique. Unlike inkjet prints that sit on top of a surface, these UV inks are cured instantly, resulting in a matte, reflection-free surface. If your living room in the Willows or your office in downtown Saskatoon has massive windows and tons of natural prairie sunlight, a metal print is your best friend. Because it is matte, you won't deal with the distracting glare of windows or overhead lights.

One of the most unique characteristics of these direct prints is the subtle shimmer you’ll notice in the highlights. It’s not an overwhelming sparkle, but a sophisticated metallic glow that adds a "visionary" feel to the highlights of a snowy riverbank or the glint of a sunset on the Delta Bessborough.

2. The Immersive Depth of Acrylic Prints

If Metal is about understated sophistication, Acrylic is about high-impact brilliance. When you want a piece of art that people can’t help but stop and stare at, Acrylic prints are the gold standard.

The secret to the "wow factor" of an acrylic print is the 3D depth effect. I use a 2mm layer of glossy acrylic glass. When light enters the side of the acrylic, it reflects internally, making the colors appear more saturated and the blacks deeper. This creates a sense of immersion, as if you could step right through the wall and onto the Meewasin Trail.

For these prints, I don't print directly onto the plastic. Instead, the image is first produced as a Photo Print on Fuji Crystal DP II. This is the absolute peak of gallery-quality photo prints. It uses traditional photochemical development rather than inkjet reproduction, resulting in an ultra-wide color gamut and luminous contrast. This high-end photographic print is then professionally mounted under the 2mm glossy acrylic glass with a museum-grade silicone seal. This seal is crucial because it ensures your art remains perfectly preserved without any bubbling or peeling: guaranteeing 75 years of color brilliance.

3. Durability That Handles the Prairie Elements

Saskatoon is a city of extremes: from +30°C summers to -40°C winters. While your home is hopefully climate-controlled, humidity and temperature fluctuations can still wreak havoc on cheap paper prints. This is where the construction of premium wall art becomes vital.

Both my Metal and Acrylic prints utilize a 3mm Aluminum Dibond backing. Even the Acrylic prints, despite having that beautiful glass front, are backed with Dibond to ensure they never warp or bend over time.

If you are looking for art for a "challenging" environment: like a high-end bathroom, a spa area, or even a sheltered outdoor patio: Metal is the superior choice. Because the 7-color UV inks are water-resistant and the Dibond is impervious to moisture, these prints are incredibly durable.

On the other hand, while Acrylic is tough, it is best suited for indoor living areas, hallways, and boardrooms where its light-refracting properties can be fully appreciated. Both options offer museum-grade durability, meaning the prairie landscapes you buy today will still look exactly the same when you pass them down to the next generation.

4. The "Floater Frame" Finish: Elevating the Gallery Look

While both Metal and Acrylic prints look fantastic as "frameless" mounts (which appear to float about half an inch off the wall), many collectors prefer a more finished, architectural look. This is where the Floater Frame comes in.

In my studio, the standard is the Basel 0.6 inch Black Oak floater frame. This isn't your typical frame that covers the edge of the photo. Instead, there is a small "shadow gap" between the art and the frame. This creates a levitating effect, making the print look like it’s suspended inside the wood.

Choosing a floater frame for your Saskatoon skyline print gives it an "art-fair" quality. It adds a touch of organic warmth (thanks to the real oak wood) to the modern feel of metal or acrylic. Every framed piece arrives exhibition-ready with metal hanging hardware already installed, so you can go from unboxing to admiring in about five minutes.

5. Technical Precision: Why Surface Matters

When you are investing in fine art, the technical details determine whether the piece feels like a "poster" or a "collectible." One thing I always tell my clients is that for these premium finishes, SuperResolution is deactivated. We rely on the raw, high-resolution clarity of the original capture to ensure every leaf on a tree in Kinsmen Park and every brick on the Bessborough is crisp.

For those who want the most traditional, high-end photographic experience, the Photo Print On Fuji Crystal DP II is the answer. As I mentioned earlier, this is a true photographic print: not an inkjet reproduction. It utilizes high-resolution laser exposure and traditional photochemical development.

When you choose this as a standalone print or mounted under acrylic, you are getting:

  • A 75-year colorfast guarantee.
  • An ultra-wide color gamut that captures the subtle oranges and pinks of a Saskatchewan sunset.
  • A glossy surface that provides maximum vividness.

If you prefer a more tactile, "artistic" feel without the reflections, the Direct Print on Metal offers a matte finish that feels modern and industrial. It’s a favorite for minimalist homes and industrial loft spaces.

Choosing the Right Piece for Your Space

Deciding between Metal and Acrylic often comes down to the lighting in your room and the "vibe" you want to create.

  • Choose Metal if: You have a lot of direct light, you want a modern/industrial look, or you need something incredibly durable for a kitchen or bathroom. Explore the Weathered Wheels collection on metal for a truly gritty, authentic feel.
  • Choose Acrylic if: You want the highest possible color impact, you love the "depth" of a 3D effect, and you want that high-end gallery glow. Our From Above collection looks spectacular in acrylic, highlighting the geometric patterns of the Saskatoon landscape.

Regardless of which finish you choose, you aren't just buying a decoration; you're bringing a piece of the visionary spirit of the prairies into your home. Each print is made to order, crafted with archival-quality materials, and shipped directly from the studio to your door.

If you have questions about which size or finish would work best for a specific wall in your home, don't hesitate to reach out through my contact page. I love helping fellow Saskatonians find the perfect way to display the beauty of our province.
